The Shapra Candoshi people speak Kandozi-Chapra, a language isolate not closely related to any other living language. They reside in the northern Peruvian Amazon along the tributaries of the Pastaza and Morona rivers in the Loreto region. Historically, they migrated from northern areas and experienced conflicts with neighboring groups such as the Jivaroans. A severe measles epidemic in the 1940s reduced their population significantly, leading to greater unity among survivors.
The Shapra Candoshi live in isolated family households scattered throughout the rainforest. Men hunt, fish, and clear fields, while women tend gardens, cook, weave, and care for the home. Children learn practical skills early, with girls managing their own gardens by age seven and boys learning to hunt and fish. Interdependence defines family life, as neither men nor women can survive alone. The people form lifelong friendships through formalized ceremonies involving gift exchanges and public declarations of loyalty.
The Shapra Candoshi adhere to ethnic religions characterized by animism, in which they believe all entities—animals, plants, stars, and natural forces—possess subjectivity and perceive the world. They recognize a supreme being called Apanchi, the creator who once lived among them but withdrew to the sky due to human disobedience. Shamans manipulate spirits such as the Yashigo to cause or cure illness and to exert power over enemies. Some exposure to Christianity has occurred through the New Testament translation, yet traditional animistic practices remain dominant.
The Shapra Candoshi live in remote areas with limited access to healthcare and education. Disease and isolation pose ongoing physical threats to their well-being. Spiritually, they require the life-giving message of salvation through Jesus Christ, as the gospel has only partially reached them. Workers committed to sharing the mercy of Jesus are essential for their eternal hope.
Pray that God would send faithful workers to the Shapra Candoshi to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and bring spiritual renewal.
Pray for physical healing and protection from diseases in their communities.
Pray that the New Testament in their language would be read and understood, leading many to faith in Christ.
Pray for existing believers to grow in maturity and become active in discipling others toward the global body of Christ.
